KABUL: Tajik officials say that in 2025, armed clashes and drug trafficking along the country’s border with Afghanistan have increased significantly. Zafar Samad, head of Tajikistan’s anti-drug authority, stated at a press conference that security forces in Tajikistan had 17 armed confrontations with drug traffickers at the Afghan border in 2025. He noted that in these clashes, two Tajik security personnel and 10 Afghan citizens were killed. He added that this figure was only six armed incidents in 2024, during which three Afghan traffickers lost their lives. According to the official, the amount of drugs seized has also risen in 2025, reaching 2,742 kilograms, compared to 1,824 kilograms in 2024. This indicates an increase of nearly one ton of drugs seized within a year. The head of Tajikistan’s anti-drug authority emphasized that drug trafficking from Afghanistan through Tajikistan to other countries continues unabated.
