WASHINGTON: U.S. Representative to the United Nations, Mike Waltz, has announced that the United States plans to pay its outstanding dues for the UN’s regular budget and peacekeeping missions in the coming weeks. Waltz emphasized that this payment is an initial practical step towards reducing U.S. arrears and is considered a clear sign of support for UN reforms. He stated, “You will soon see a significant portion of our annual contribution. While this is the first installment of our arrears, it sends a clear message that the U.S. supports UN reforms.” He further noted that the U.S. wants the United Nations to be an efficient, organized, and focused organization, with a reduction in redundant branches, concentrating on areas that guarantee peace, security, and the protection of human rights. UN officials have reported that about 95% of the organization’s regular budget arrears are owed by the U.S., and nearly $2.4 billion remains unpaid for peacekeeping missions.
