WASHINGTON: The United States has announced new sanctions aimed at restricting Iran’s oil exports. This comes after the conclusion of discussions between American and Iranian negotiators in Oman, leading to the imposition of restrictions on Iranian oil exports and targeting 14 Iranian vessels. Tommy Pigott, spokesperson for the U.S. State Department, stated that Iran uses revenues from oil exports to fund destabilizing activities worldwide and to oppress its own people domestically. The State Department announced that all activities associated with these 14 vessels, which are reportedly involved in transporting Iranian oil, will be halted. The ships are part of what the U.S. refers to as the Islamic Republic’s “shadow fleet” and operate under flags from Turkey, India, and the United Arab Emirates, being registered in those countries. The new sanctions also include measures against two Iranian officials and 15 entities connected to the Iranian government.
