ZAMBIA: A hunter in eastern Zambia tragically died after encountering a herd of elephants and attempting to escape, only to be attacked by a crocodile. Local police reported that 52-year-old Din Nirenda was returning from a hunting trip with two others when they unexpectedly came across the elephants. In their bid to save themselves, all three fled, and Nirenda jumped into a waterway near the Luangwa River. According to Robertson Mwemba, the local police commander, a crocodile attacked Nirenda at that moment, biting into his right thigh. He managed to fend off the crocodile with a stick and emerged from the water, but he was suffering from severe bleeding. The two other hunters attempted to stop the bleeding, but their efforts were unsuccessful, and Nirenda succumbed to his injuries. Zambia is known for its rich biodiversity, and the Luangwa River is one of the main habitats for Nile crocodiles. According to the African Resources organization, in 2023, out of 26 wildlife-related deaths in the country, at least 15 were due to crocodile attacks.
