HERAT: Taliban’s “Promotion of Virtue and Prevention of Vice” forces have arrested a young woman in Herat for the alleged crime of secretly teaching taekwondo to girls. According to the media outlet Rukhshana, 22-year-old Khadija Ahmadzada was detained on Saturday morning while conducting taekwondo training in the parking area of a residential house. A source close to the Ahmadzada family stated, “We did not know where she was taken. After a long search, we found out she had been transferred to the central prison in Herat.” Additionally, Ahmadzada’s father and the homeowner where the training sessions were held have also been arrested, and all three are being held in Herat’s central prison. This informal training space was created to provide opportunities for girls in Herat to continue their sports activities following the Taliban’s imposition of strict restrictions. It is noteworthy that the Taliban government has severely limited women’s activities, prohibiting education, work, sports, and travel without a male guardian for women and girls. Furthermore, strict dress codes have also been enforced on women and girls in Afghanistan.
