MAZAR-E-SHARIF: Taliban authorities have suspended the activities of state television (Radio Television of Afghanistan) in Balkh province. The Afghanistan Journalists Center stated that Balkh is the twenty-first province where the Taliban have halted television operations. The center noted that the ban on broadcasting images of living beings has led to the suspension of the national television’s operations in that province, which contradicts the fundamental principles of freedom of expression and free media. The provincial branch of the national television in Balkh has now been converted into a radio station. The statement from the journalists’ center referenced a meeting where the Taliban governor of Balkh, Yusuf Wafa, prohibited local officials from conducting video interviews. The Taliban government has announced a ban on broadcasting images of living beings on television, implementing this restriction in several provinces.
