Rosa Otunbayeva’s mission ends in Afghanistan

KABUL: The United Nations Secretary-General’s Special Representative, Rosa Otunbayeva, officially concluded her mission in Afghanistan during a meeting with some Taliban officials in Mazar-i-Sharif. Mawlavi Abdul Kabir Taliban’s Minister of Refugees and Repatriations, in a meeting with Otunbayeva praised her efforts for Afghanistan. At the same time, she emphasized the need for humanitarian assistance, including support for earthquake victims. Reports indicate that the United Nations Security Council is set to hold a meeting on Afghanistan in September, where Rosa Otunbayeva is expected to present her final report on the situation in the country. Otunbayeva was appointed as the Special Representative of the Secretary-General and head of UNAMA in September 2022. Before this role, she served as the President of Kyrgyzstan from 2010 to 2011. Her mission concludes at a time when Afghanistan continues to face widespread poverty and a crisis of displacement.
