At least 15 dead, 18 injured in deadly Cable Car accident in Lisbon

LISBON: A historic cable car derailed in Lisbon, Portugal, resulting in at least 15 fatalities and 18 injuries. Lisbon authorities report that the condition of five of the injured is critical, while others, including a child, sustained minor injuries. The emergency medical services in Lisbon indicated that among the victims, there are non-Portuguese citizens, but their identities have not yet been confirmed. The incident occurred around 6 PM on Wednesday near the Praça da Liberdade (Liberty Square). Officials have confirmed that all individuals initially reported trapped in the cabin have been rescued. Portuguese President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa expressed condolences to the families of the victims. Witnesses stated that the cable car lost control while moving and collided at high speed with a building without braking. The company “Cris,” responsible for the operation of the cable car, announced that investigations have begun and emphasized that all maintenance protocols were followed.
