KABUL: The World Food Programme (WFP) has issued a warning in its latest report that due to declining international assistance and financial shortages, hundreds of thousands of malnourished mothers and children in Afghanistan have not received the necessary aid. The organization stated that 9.5 million people in Afghanistan are facing severe food insecurity, with 4.6 million mothers and children requiring immediate assistance. According to the WFP report, this year alone, 3.5 million children under five and over one million pregnant and breastfeeding mothers are at risk of acute malnutrition. The organization emphasized that it urgently needs over $650 million to continue humanitarian activities through the end of 2025. Budget shortfalls have led nutrition centers to turn away some clients. Women and children are particularly vulnerable, and despite the Taliban’s restrictions on education, work, and women’s freedoms, they continue to seek life-saving assistance at WFP centers.
