ISLAMABAD: The National Disaster Management Authority of Pakistan has reported that heavy rainfall in the northern regions has led to landslides and flash flooding, resulting in over 200 fatalities and dozens of people missing in the past 24 hours. Most casualties have been reported in the mountainous province of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, where more than 180 individuals have lost their lives. Sayed Muhammad Tayyab Shah, a representative of the authority, stated to AFP that this year’s monsoon season has started earlier than usual and is likely to last longer. He noted that rainfall intensity is expected to increase in the next 15 days. In Indian-administered Kashmir, rescuers were able to recover several bodies from the debris after flooding claimed the lives of 60 people and left many others missing. Monsoon rains account for 70 to 80 percent of annual precipitation in South Asia and are vital for agriculture and food security in the region. However, they also cause significant damage each year. In Pakistan, landslides and floods typically occur during the monsoon season, which runs from June to the end of September.
