TEHRAN: Iran has expressed its opposition to the Lebanese government’s decision to disarm Hezbollah. Hezbollah is a political and military group that the U.S. designates as a terrorist organization, while the European Union has only included its military wing on the blacklist. According to reports from the French Press citing Iran’s Tasnim news agency, Ali Akbar Velayati, a senior advisor to Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, has opposed the disarmament of Hezbollah. Last week, the Lebanese cabinet granted its military the authority to work towards consolidating state power, which includes plans for disarming Hezbollah by the end of the year. Hezbollah has labeled this decision by the Lebanese cabinet a “grave sin.”
