WASHINGTON: U.S. President Donald Trump has issued an executive order raising tariffs on imports from India by 25% to address India’s continued oil purchases from Russia. As a result of this directive, the total tariff on Indian imports to the U.S. will rise to 50%, marking the highest tariff level under the Trump administration. The new tariff is set to take effect 21 days later, on August 27. In response, India’s Ministry of External Affairs has stated that New Delhi has already made its position clear and has labeled the tariff as “unjust, unwarranted, and irrational.” The statement expressed disappointment, noting, “It is unfortunate that the U.S. is imposing additional tariffs on India solely due to actions that other countries also undertake based on their national interests. India will take all necessary steps to safeguard its national interests.”
