SYDNEY: Hundreds of thousands of people participated in one of the largest anti-war demonstrations in Sydney, Australia, against Israel’s actions in Gaza. The rally, titled “March for Humanity,” took place at the Sydney Harbour Bridge and in central Melbourne, with protesters calling for an immediate ceasefire and humanitarian aid to Gaza. The Sydney Action for Palestine group reported that up to 300,000 people attended the protest, making it one of the largest gatherings of Palestinian supporters in the country. The demonstration featured prominent figures such as Julian Assange, the founder of WikiLeaks, and Mehreen Faruqi, a senator from the Greens party. Protesters condemned the Australian government for supporting the supply chain of F-35 fighter jets used in Israeli attacks, labeling it a “complicit” party in the conflict. They also voiced concerns over the hunger crisis in Gaza, which has led to the deaths of hundreds, including children. Australian media described the protests as a reflection of widespread public dissatisfaction with the government’s policies regarding the Gaza war. Protesters demanded strict sanctions against Israel and the recognition of the Palestinian state as a significant step towards a two-state solution. These demonstrations occurred amid announcements from Australia and over ten other countries expressing their support for the potential recognition of Palestine.
