WASHINGTON: The American news website Axios has reported that over ten members of the Democratic Party in the U.S. House of Representatives have signed a letter requesting that the Trump administration recognize the state of Palestine. One of the representatives plans to introduce a resolution on this matter. The efforts have intensified as the conflict in Gaza continues and a wave of global support for recognizing Palestine has emerged. In this context, fifteen Western countries, including France, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand, issued a statement last week calling for an end to the war and the official recognition of Palestine. The developments follow a “two-state solution” conference held in New York, which included participation from Saudi Arabia and France, though the U.S. did not attend. The British Prime Minister has warned that if Israel’s policies do not change, London may recognize Palestine in September. The President of France also intends to raise this issue at the upcoming United Nations meeting. Previously, Spain, Norway, Ireland, and Slovenia have recognized Palestine. In total, 149 member countries of the United Nations have recognized the state of Palestine.
