LONDON: The Prime Minister of the United Kingdom has warned that if Israel does not take concrete steps to end the Gaza crisis by September, the UK will recognize Palestine as a state. The Prime Minister of Palestine has described this potential recognition as an investment in peace and stability in the region. Keir Starmer stated during an emergency cabinet meeting on Tuesday that if Israel does not agree to a ceasefire in Gaza and pursue a sustainable peace path, the UK will formally recognize Palestine. He emphasized, “If Israel does not accept a ceasefire by September, release aid, commit to peace, and refrain from annexing the West Bank, it will be time to act.” Starmer noted that recognizing Palestine under the current circumstances could have a significant impact on the peace process. He also urged Hamas to release hostages, accept a ceasefire, and step back from governing Gaza. Recently, French President Emmanuel Macron announced that Paris would recognize Palestine in September if there is no progress toward peace. Simultaneously, Mohammad Mustafa, the Prime Minister of the Palestinian Authority, stated at a special UN session that Palestinians seek to establish an independent and progressive state, adding that “Recognizing Palestine is not just a political decision but an investment in regional peace and security.” Mustafa warned that global conferences should not settle for declarations but should lead to practical actions for implementing the two-state solution.
