WASHINGTON: U.S. President Donald Trump has stated that he will shorten the established ceasefire deadline for Russian President Vladimir Putin from 50 days to around 10 to 12 days. This comes in response to Russia’s ongoing bombardment of Ukraine and the lack of progress towards peace, which has left Trump dissatisfied. During a press conference on July 28 in Turnberry, Scotland, Trump remarked, “I am very disappointed in Putin. He doesn’t need to wait. If Moscow does not reach a peace agreement with Kyiv, I am not bound to wait until the end of the 50-day deadline given at the beginning of this month.” Trump added, “I will set a new deadline in about 10 or 12 days from today.” The remarks were made during a meeting with British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, where Trump emphasized that prolonged negotiations provide insight into expected actions. “I gave him (Putin) a chance, but he did not take it,” he noted. The White House has not clarified what will happen if Russia does not respond within this new timeframe, but Trump stated, “We might still reach an agreement with Russia, but it is very late now.” Andriy Yermak, the head of Ukraine’s presidential office, expressed gratitude on Telegram, saying, “We thank U.S. President Donald Trump for his strong stance and clear message—peace is achieved through strength.” As of now, Russia has not responded to President Trump’s comments.
