KABUL: The Taliban’s Supreme Court announced that six individuals were publicly whipped in Kabul for the alleged sale and purchase of “tablet K, ecstasy, opium, alcoholic beverages, and hashish.” According to the court’s statement, these individuals were sentenced on Saturday, by a primary court for drug and alcohol offenses to receive between 10 and 30 lashes, as well as prison sentences ranging from seven months to two years. Since retaking control of Afghanistan, the Taliban have repeatedly carried out public lashings and executions. International human rights organizations have deemed these actions contrary to international law and have called for their cessation; however, the Taliban consider the public imposition of these punishments as an enforcement of Sharia law.
