CANGO: As a result of the armed forces attack in the eastern region of Congo, 66 people were killed over the past few days.

According to a report from a United Nations radio, these attacks occurred in an insecure area of Ituri province, with many victims reportedly beheaded.

Reports indicate that these killings were carried out by a group that has pledged allegiance to ISIS, which operates along the Congo-Uganda border.

The assaults are seen as a sign of the group’s return to violence after a period of dormancy.

The eastern region of Congo, particularly the Ituri and Kivu provinces, has faced ongoing instability for decades due to the presence of numerous armed groups and rich mineral resources.

Conflicts have displaced hundreds of thousands of people and claimed thousands of lives.

The United Nations, which has deployed peacekeeping forces to the region, has faced criticism for failing to ensure the complete protection of civilians.

Local and international officials have condemned these attacks.

Jean-Toby Okala, a spokesperson for the UN mission in Ituri, referred to the incident as a “bloodbath” and called for urgent measures to halt the violence.
