Water crisis in Afghanistan: One-third of population lacks access to safe drinking water

KABUL: The United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) has announced that nearly one-third of the country’s population does not have access to safe drinking water.

In a post on its Facebook page on Sunday, UNAMA said that over 10 million people continue to rely on unsafe and unprotected water sources.

The organization stated that despite some progress, the water crisis continues to exert significant pressure on rural areas, particularly affecting women and children.

UNAMA has also committed to assisting in the reconstruction and revitalization of water supply infrastructure that has been damaged due to war and drought.

Earlier, the Japan Times reported, “Kabul is losing the battle against water shortages,” highlighting that the water situation in Afghanistan’s capital is clearly worsening.

According to the report and experts’ warnings, if measures are not taken to protect Kabul’s groundwater resources, these resources may be completely depleted by 2030.
