KABUL: Pakistan will assume the presidency of the Taliban Sanctions Committee at the United Nations Security Council in 2025.

According to a report by the Indian media outlet

“Economic Times” on Wednesday, June 14, Pakistan has also been elected as the vice-chair of the UN Counter-Terrorism Committee.

The report states that Pakistan will lead the

“1988 Sanctions Committee,” which is responsible for imposing sanctions such as asset freezes, travel bans, and arms embargo on individuals, groups, and entities identified as linked to the Taliban and posing threats to peace, stability, and security in Afghanistan.

Additionally, it has been mentioned that Denmark will chair the 1267 Sanctions Committee related to ISIS and Al-Qaeda in 2025, with Russia and Sierra Leone designated as vice-chairs of this committee.

Pakistan has been elected as a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council for the 2025-2026 term.

This comes despite international sanctions, including travel bans, as Taliban representatives have traveled to various countries multiple times over the past three years.
