HERAT: Da Afghanistan Breshna Sherkat (DABS) has announced the opening of a 200-megawatt wind power project in Herat, costing $64 million.
The project was inaugurated today, with the presence of senior Taliban officials and representatives from the Turkish company “77.”
Mullah Abdul Ghani Baradar Akhund, the Taliban’s Deputy Minister for Economic Affairs, stated during the inauguration that Afghanistan has relied on imported electricity for years, which is both costly and not sustainable in the long term. He emphasized that this project will not only meet Afghanistan’s energy needs but also play a significant role in combating climate change.
Abdul Bari Omar, the Executive Director of the Electricity Company, noted that the first phase of the project, with a capacity to produce 43.2 megawatts of electricity, officially began today in the presence of high-ranking officials.
Officials stated that once completed, this project will resolve the electricity issues faced by industrialists in Herat. Additionally, the electricity company also inaugurated a 5 megawatt solar power project in the region.
Recently, the shortage of electricity has been identified as a significant challenge to industrial development and access to daily necessities for the citizens.
