KABUL: The United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) has reported that 48% of the country’s population lives below the poverty line.

UNAMA stated on its Facebook page Monday that by 2025, about 22.9 million people in Afghanistan will be in need of assistance.

Additionally, 14.8 million individuals are facing food insecurity, and 48% of the population lives in poverty.

UNAMA noted that more than 3 million people live near areas contaminated with unexploded ordnance.

The UN office emphasized, “These figures are not just numbers. Our inability to mobilize sufficient and timely funding to address these issues will have devastating consequences.”

Currently, aid organizations in Afghanistan are facing severe funding shortages. The UN has requested over $2.4 billion for assistance in 2025, but only 12% of this budget has been secured so far.

The U.S., which was the largest donor to Afghanistan, cut its foreign aid following Donald Trump’s administration.
