MEHTARLAM: The Taliban’s Directorate for Promotion of Virtue and Prevention of Vice in the Alingar district of Laghman province has announced the burning of 109 musical instruments that were collected from public celebrations over the past few months.

According to local media reports and published images, items such as loudspeakers and drums were destroyed by fire.

The Taliban, who consider music to be forbidden, have consistently gathered and destroyed musical instruments and related equipment since their takeover of Afghanistan in August 2021.

This action is part of the Taliban’s strict policies to impose their interpretation of Islamic law, which deems music, dancing, and celebrations as haram (forbidden).

The Taliban’s Ministry for Promotion of Virtue has stated that over 21,000 musical instruments have been burned across the country in the past year.

Human rights activists and cultural advocates view the Taliban’s policy of banning music and destroying musical instruments as a violation of cultural freedoms and a serious threat to Afghanistan’s artistic heritage.
