Sleep medications may disrupt brain cleansing during sleep

KABUL: Recent research by Danish scientists reveals that the brain uses the glymphatic system to clear out toxins and waste during sleep.

This process is crucial for brain health and the prevention of diseases such as Alzheimer’s.

A study conducted on mice showed that sleep medications like Zolpidem, commonly used to treat insomnia, reduce the activity of this cleansing system.

Mice that received this medication produced less norepinephrine, a substance critical for the movement of cerebrospinal fluid and the removal of toxins.

Researchers emphasize that deep, quality sleep aids in brain cleansing, but the use of certain sleep medications may disrupt this important process. These findings could enhance our understanding of brain diseases and prevention strategies.
