OCHA: Taliban interventions major obstacle to humanitarian aid in Afghanistan

KABUL: The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) has stated that direct interventions by the Taliban are the biggest barrier to humanitarian activities in Afghanistan.

According to the report, 44 interventions were recorded in April 2025, which account for 73% of the limitations on aid delivery.

This figure represents a 16% increase compared to March and has led to the suspension of 35 aid projects.

OCHA noted that the interventions include interference in aid distribution, delays in signing agreements, involvement in hiring processes, and restrictions on women’s participation in relief activities.

The organization warned that continued such trends will exacerbate the humanitarian crisis in the country.

Moreover, incidents of violence against aid workers have also increased, with 29 individuals (13 women and 16 men) detained in seven incidents. Additionally, 18% of these incidents were motivated by gender.

The Taliban have not yet responded to this report, although they have previously denied any interference in the activities of aid organizations.

OCHA emphasized that a decrease in the activities of aid agencies should not be mistaken for an improvement in the situation, as it is largely due to reduced financial resources.

Currently, nearly 23 million people in Afghanistan are in need of humanitarian assistance.
