Lebanese President Joseph Aoun has called on the United States to continue supporting Lebanon as a US-backed framework aimed at securing a lasting end to hostilities between Lebanon and Israel moves forward following the latest conflict with Hezbollah. In a message marking the 250th anniversary of US independence, addressed to President Donald Trump, Mr Aoun urged Washington to “continue standing with Lebanon’s legitimate rights, its state institutions, its army and its people.” He also expressed hope that Lebanon could “turn the page on war” and enter a new era of peace, stability and hope. The US-backed framework envisages the disarmament of Hezbollah, the gradual withdrawal of Israeli forces from southern Lebanon, and the deployment of the Lebanese Armed Forces to the area. The plan is expected to begin with two pilot zones. Meanwhile, the US Embassy in Beirut said Washington remained committed to supporting the Lebanese people as they work towards a more peaceful, stable and prosperous future.
