Noor Ahmad Islamjar, the Taliban governor of Herat, has said that a number of women were detained in the province due to what he described as a decline in compliance with the dress code prescribed by the Taliban. He described the measure as an “order of God and the Prophet” and claimed that the detained women were rounded up by female officers. Islamjar also said that videos circulated about the detention of women were “fake and generated by artificial intelligence,” and claimed that no women were being held in prison. According to him, some of the detained women were later released following “recommendations and guarantees provided by their families.” His remarks come as videos circulated from Herat appear to show male Taliban personnel detaining women and girls.
