WASHINGTON — US President Donald Trump has said Iran must guarantee that it will never obtain nuclear weapons, as negotiations between Tehran and Washington continue over the Iranian nuclear programme and regional security issues. According to reports, Trump said the Strait of Hormuz should remain fully open to maritime traffic in both directions, without restrictions or transit charges. He also called for the clearance and removal of naval mines in the strategic waterway, saying the process should be carried out under full supervision. Trump further stated that, under a potential agreement, Iran’s uranium stockpiles should be removed from underground facilities and destroyed, adding that no financial exchanges with Tehran would take place. In another part of his remarks, Trump said the naval blockade on Iran would be lifted if progress is made in the negotiations, with a final decision to be taken during meetings among US officials. The comments come as talks between Tehran and Washington continue, focusing on sensitive issues including Iran’s nuclear activities, sanctions and maritime security in the Persian Gulf. As of the time of publication, the Iranian government had not issued an official response to the remarks.
