The Collective Security Treaty Organization has warned that increasing militant activity in Afghanistan poses a serious concern for its member states. The issue was discussed during a meeting of the Afghanistan working group under the Council of Foreign Ministers held in Moscow, where the country’s security situation was reviewed. Despite some measures taken by the Taliban, threats from militant groups and drug trafficking remain persistent, according to participants. Attendees stressed the need for coordinated cooperation to counter militancy and to support peace processes, while also approving a work plan for the second half of 2026. The Secretary General of the CSTO described Afghanistan as a serious security challenge for member states, adding that political stability and sustainable development in the country would benefit the wider region. Member countries, including Russia and several Central Asian states, while maintaining engagement with the Taliban, have expressed ongoing concerns over militant activity in Afghanistan and cross-border attacks.
