A migrant boat traveling from Libya to Europe has sunk in the Mediterranean Sea. According to rescue organizations, out of the 105 people on board, 32 have been rescued, while 71 remain missing. The bodies of two individuals have also been recovered. The survivors were first transferred to Italian coastal vessels and then taken to the island of Lampedusa. Videos released show that many of the passengers were clinging to the survivors in the water, but harsh weather and sea conditions made rescue operations difficult. This route between North Africa and Europe is one of the most dangerous illegal migration routes, and each year multiple incidents of shipwrecks and migrant deaths are reported along this path. The International Organization for Migration stated that since the beginning of this year, at least 683 people have died or gone missing in the Central Mediterranean during migration attempts, the highest number recorded since 2014.
