The International Organization for Migration has announced that over the past year, 1,492 Afghan citizens have died or gone missing along international migration routes. The organization said on Tuesday that in 2025, a total of 2,722 people from Asian and Pacific countries died, with the highest number from Afghanistan, followed by Myanmar. The report states that most incidents occurred along land routes between Afghanistan and Iran, as well as sea routes in the Bay of Bengal and the Andaman Sea. It added that 91 percent of these deaths were recorded within the region; at least 2,471 people died or went missing in Asia and the Pacific, including 1,547 in South Asia, 920 in Southeast Asia, and 4 in East Asia. Most of the Afghan victims were adult men, while many of the deceased Rohingya were adult women and children. Since the Taliban took control of the country, migration has increased due to unemployment, poverty, and restrictions imposed by the group, and many people choose migration despite the deadly risks.
