Pakistani media have reported that a joint peace jirga is set to be held in the city of Peshawar, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, with the aim of reducing tensions between the Taliban in Afghanistan and Pakistan. The meeting is planned to include political leaders, tribal elders, religious scholars, members of civil society, the business community, and media representatives. Shehzad Khan, former secretary of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, stated that the jirga will focus on “mutual respect, confidence-building, and serious negotiations for sustainable peace.” He added that a joint declaration supporting peace will be issued at the conclusion of the gathering and sent to the governments of both countries. The jirga comes at a time when conflict between the Taliban and Pakistan has continued for more than a month, during which both sides have carried out air and rocket attacks. The Taliban have stated that they seek to resolve tensions with Pakistan through diplomatic means, while Pakistani officials have said that operations will continue until their objectives are achieved. The meeting could mark the beginning of a new phase of engagement and understanding between the two neighboring countries and serve as a positive step toward regional stability.
