Trump Seeks Quick End to Iran War but Lacks Clear Exit Strategy

Donald Trump has privately said he wants to avoid a “long war” with Iran and hopes to end the conflict within the next few weeks. However, he does not yet have clear options to end the war, and peace negotiations remain in the early stages. According to a report by The Wall Street Journal, Trump is weighing a diplomatic solution against continued military pressure on Iran. He has warned that if no agreement is reached, the United States may carry out more intense attacks, but he remains cautious about deploying ground troops due to the risk of casualties. Ideas such as U.S. access to Iran’s oil resources as part of a potential agreement have been discussed, but no clear plan has yet been finalized. The outcome of the war is not entirely under Trump’s control. Iran has rejected direct negotiations, and any disruption in the Strait of Hormuz or independent military action by Israel could further prolong the crisis. Rising war costs and increasing energy prices are also adding political pressure on Trump and Republicans at home. Domestically, divisions have emerged within the U.S. security and military leadership. Some officials support continued military pressure, while Trump appears more inclined toward de-escalation. This fluctuation between diplomacy and military escalation has made the direction of U.S. policy difficult to predict, and the war is becoming a decisive factor in Trump’s domestic political future.
