New Female Teachers in Primary Schools Denied Work Permits

The Taliban’s Ministry of Labor and Social Affairs has also suspended the issuance of work permits to female workers and teachers until further notice. Two female teachers who were recently appointed as teachers in girls’ primary schools told the media that despite completing the full legal recruitment process, the Taliban’s Ministry of Labor and Social Affairs has refused to issue their work permits. They added: “We were appointed to a primary school through the Ministry of Education’s teacher recruitment exam, but we are not being given work permits. The reason given is that, based on ministry instructions, work permits are not being issued to female teachers.” At present, dozens of newly appointed female teachers in primary schools are facing the same situation. It is not yet clear whether this restriction is related to the broader ban on women’s education and work or due to administrative procedures.
