A drone attack has targeted the Ali Al Salem Air Base in Kuwait, where Italian and United States forces are stationed, the Italian military has announced. According to the statement, the drone struck the Ali Al Salem Air Base, which hosts American and Italian troops and equipment. However, the military emphasized that all Italian personnel were safe and unharmed. Italy’s Chief of Defence Staff, Luciano Portolano, said in a statement published by the military on X that the drone hit a shelter used to house an unmanned aerial vehicle belonging to Italy’s operational air force, completely destroying it. He stressed that all forces were secure at the time of the attack and that no injuries were reported. A few hours later, Italy’s Foreign Minister, Antonio Tajani, said he does not believe the attack was directly aimed at Italian troops. Meanwhile, another Italian military base located in Erbil in the Kurdistan Region of Iraq was also targeted by a drone attack late Wednesday night. However, no casualties were reported in that incident either. Speaking to the Italian state television network Rai, Tajani said: “We are not at war with anyone.”
