United Nations experts have condemned the military strikes carried out by the United States and Israel against Iran, stating that the actions were illegal under international law. In a joint statement released on Thursday, March 5, the experts emphasized that the attacks were conducted without authorization from the United Nations Security Council and occurred during ongoing diplomatic negotiations. The statement said: “These strikes violate the fundamental prohibition on the use of force, sovereign equality, territorial integrity, and the duty to resolve disputes peacefully under Article 2 of the United Nations Charter.” The experts also expressed concern that potential Iranian responses in the Persian Gulf and other parts of the Middle East could escalate tensions, noting that any defensive action must comply with the principles of necessity and proportionality. They stated: “We cannot choose when international law applies. Illegal military intervention is not a solution to the nuclear issue, alleged terrorism, or the human rights situation in Iran.” The experts called on all parties to immediately cease hostilities and resume diplomatic dialogue. The United States and Israel conducted the strikes against Iran six days ago, claiming the action was taken to prevent perceived threats from Iran.
