DAVOS: U.S. President Donald Trump announced at the World Economic Forum in Davos that a “framework” for a potential agreement concerning the future of Greenland has been established. He made the remarks following a meeting with NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte. Trump indicated that this framework, if finalized, could enhance the security of the U.S. and its NATO allies. He emphasized that he does not intend to use military force but seeks dialogue to obtain ownership of the island, viewing it as vital for U.S. national security. European officials have reacted to these assertions. French President Emmanuel Macron warned that such policies could weaken international laws and promote a mindset of “might makes right.” Denmark’s Foreign Minister has expressed the country’s readiness to discuss U.S. security concerns in the Arctic, but stressed that maintaining Denmark’s sovereignty and territorial integrity is a fundamental principle in the process. Meanwhile, BBC’s senior international correspondent, Lyse Doucet, noted that Trump has challenged the global order more than any U.S. president since World War II. She remarked that threatening to seize territory from an ally is an unprecedented act that could undermine Western alliances. NATO has stated that discussions among the U.S., Denmark, and Greenlandic officials will continue, with the aim of preventing increased Russian and Chinese influence in the Arctic region. According to the New York Times, one option being considered may allow the U.S. to expand its military presence in certain areas of Greenland, where over 100 U.S. troops are currently stationed at the Thule Air Base. Trump also mentioned that a potential agreement could include cooperation in mining resources and defense projects. However, critics have warned that such actions may conflict with international laws and the wishes of the local populations.
