Snow Leopard kills 17 livestock in Wakhan

WAKHAN: A snow leopard, an endangered species in Afghanistan’s wildlife, attacked livestock belonging to residents of Wakhan district and then fled the scene. Local sources reported that 17 livestock were killed in the incident in Qazi Deh village. Snow leopards sometimes attack villages in winter due to a lack of natural prey. The event comes amid a significant decline in the population of this species in northeastern Afghanistan, where illegal hunting and killings in recent years have posed a serious threat to their survival.
