KABUL: Bulgarian police have announced the arrest of 24 Afghan refugees along with a smuggler near the Turkish border. These individuals were being transported in a truck and had reportedly paid thousands of euros to reach European countries. Bulgarian media reported that the refugees were in poor physical condition at the time of their arrest and were transferred to a migrant center after receiving initial medical assistance. The truck driver, who ignored police orders, attempted to flee after colliding with several vehicles but was apprehended along with an accomplice, both of whom are Bulgarian citizens. One Afghan refugee stated that each individual had paid approximately four thousand euros for illegal passage. Bulgaria is considered a significant entry point for refugees into the European Union due to its shared border with Turkey, and despite security measures, human trafficking continues to persist. Earlier, in February 2022, police discovered the bodies of 18 Afghan refugees, including a child, in an abandoned truck near Sofia, who had died from oxygen deprivation.
