Rabab Fatima, the UN Secretary-General’s Special Representative for Afghanistan and head of the United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA), has reaffirmed the organisation’s commitment to supporting the Afghan people as the United Nations marks its 81st anniversary.

In a statement issued on Saturday, 24 October, Fatima praised the resilience and determination of Afghans, saying people across the country continue to serve their communities despite decades of conflict, hardship and humanitarian challenges.

She said the United Nations had stood alongside Afghans through periods of conflict, drought, displacement and urgent humanitarian need, adding that the determination of the Afghan people remained a source of hope and inspiration.

Fatima, who began her duties in Afghanistan earlier this month, said she approached her new role with deep respect for the country’s people, culture and heritage. She pledged to listen to Afghans, engage with communities and work alongside them.

“The future of Afghanistan belongs to its people,” Fatima said, reaffirming the UN’s commitment to promoting the dignity, well-being and opportunities of all Afghans.

The United Nations was established in 1945, and Afghanistan joined the organisation in 1946. UN Day is marked annually on 24 October to commemorate the entry into force of the UN Charter.
