Richard Lindsay, the UK’s Special Representative for Afghanistan, has stressed that the rights, security and participation of women and girls are essential to Afghanistan’s future stability and progress. Following his visit to Kabul, the UK Foreign Office said he had met Afghan officials, women’s rights activists, journalists and civil society representatives.
According to the statement, discussions focused on Afghanistan’s security situation, reducing regional tensions, countering militant groups, economic challenges and expanding humanitarian assistance. Lindsay also met representatives of the Afghan Red Crescent Society, the United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA), the World Bank and other international organisations to discuss humanitarian needs and support for the Afghan people.
Lindsay said women and girls must have their rights protected, feel safe and be able to participate fully in society for Afghanistan to achieve lasting stability and prosperity. The UK said it remained committed to supporting the Afghan people and engaging with relevant parties on the country’s key challenges.
