US special envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner have left Kyiv after talks with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy failed to produce a breakthrough towards ending Russia’s war in Ukraine.
The talks, which followed the envoys’ meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Moscow, focused on efforts to revive peace negotiations. Both sides described the discussions as substantive, but no agreement on ending the war was announced.
Mr Zelenskyy said Ukraine’s priorities included additional air defence systems, particularly Patriot missiles, as well as US and European support for protecting energy infrastructure ahead of winter.
The US envoys said they hoped to revive direct negotiations between Russia and Ukraine, potentially through a trilateral format. However, major differences remain, particularly over territory and security guarantees.
