US President Donald Trump has warned that Iran would face a devastating and unprecedented military response if it were to carry out an assassination attempt against him. In an interview with the New York Post, Trump said he had already issued instructions for the United States to respond decisively if he were killed. “I’ve given orders that if anything happens to me, Iran should be bombed like they’ve never seen before,” he said. Trump also dismissed recent reports suggesting there was a new Iranian assassination plot against him, saying the threat was not new. He claimed that the Islamic Republic had been seeking to assassinate him for years. “I’ve been at the top of their assassination list for a long time. That’s life. I hope you’ll miss me if something happens,” Trump said. Hostility between Trump and the Islamic Republic of Iran escalated in 2020 after he ordered the strike that killed Iranian military commander Qassem Soleimani. Trump’s remarks come as US authorities continue to investigate security threats against him following the failed assassination attempt at a campaign rally in Pennsylvania on 13 July 2024. Since then, several other alleged plots targeting the US president have also been uncovered and disrupted, according to US officials.
