US Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth has said the withdrawal of American forces from Afghanistan under President Joe Biden damaged the United States’ credibility, contrasting it with withdrawals from Syria and Iraq during Donald Trump’s presidency.
Hegseth criticised the Biden administration’s handling of the Afghanistan withdrawal in 2021, which was marked by chaotic scenes as US forces completed their departure after nearly 20 years of military involvement.
The evacuation at Kabul airport was further overshadowed by a suicide bombing claimed by Islamic State Khorasan Province, which killed 13 US service members and numerous Afghan civilians.
