Members of the Afghan-American community in Virginia and across the Washington, DC, metropolitan area gathered at a fundraising event in support of Dr. Aisha Wahab, a member of the US Congress.

The event was organized with the coordination of Abdul Naseer Yasini, president of the Afghan Cultural Society, and brought together community leaders, elders, professionals and supporters of Ms Wahab.

More than $60,000 was pledged to Ms Wahab’s election campaign during the event. Organizers said the contributions would be transferred to the campaign in accordance with US campaign-finance laws.

In her remarks, Ms Wahab spoke about issues affecting Afghan-American communities and the situation in Afghanistan, particularly restrictions and difficulties facing women and girls.

Afghan journalist Nazira Karimi also attended the gathering and contributed to the cultural program by reciting several poems.

According to the organizers, the Virginia event followed a similar gathering in Stockton, California.
