Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi has said that Tehran supports the formation of an inclusive government in Afghanistan and will back any initiative aimed at achieving that goal. Speaking at a meeting of foreign ministers from member states of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) on Thursday,Araghchi reiterated Iran’s deep historical, cultural and civilisational ties with the Afghan people. He stressed, however, that Tehran does not interfere in the internal affairs of other countries and fully respects their national sovereignty. Araghchi added that Iran would support any political process in Afghanistan that ensures the participation of all ethnic groups, factions and social segments, and helps pave the way for peace and stability. The Iranian foreign minister’s remarks come amid growing regional and international calls for Afghanistan’s current authorities to move towards a more representative system of governance.
