The head of the Norwegian Refugee Council (NRC) says more than four million Afghan migrants living in Iran require increased humanitarian assistance and immediate support. Jan Egeland wrote on X that Afghans residing in Iran are in need of greater humanitarian aid and broader international support, describing their situation as deeply concerning. He also said that both Afghan and Iranian children have suffered serious psychological distress as a result of recent bombardments and the ongoing conflict situation. According to Egeland, many families have lost even their limited sources of income due to the war and the economic crisis, leaving them unable to meet their basic daily needs. Iran has hosted millions of Afghan migrants for decades. However, worsening economic pressures and regional tensions in recent years have made living conditions increasingly difficult for many of them. Egeland called for greater international attention and assistance to help vulnerable Afghan migrant communities in Iran and to address their growing humanitarian needs.
