Steven Cheung, the White House communications director, sharply criticised former U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo in response to his remarks about a possible agreement with Iran on X. Cheung wrote: “Mike Pompeo has no understanding of the issue. He should keep his mouth shut and leave the real work to the professionals.” He also said Pompeo was “out of the loop” and therefore “does not know what is happening.” The remarks came after Mike Pompeo said in a post on X that a possible agreement with Iran resembled the policies pursued under former President Joe Biden’s administration. He warned that such an agreement could allow Iran access to financial resources, continued uranium enrichment, and greater influence over the Strait of Hormuz. The comments followed remarks made hours earlier by Donald Trump, who said that a large part of an agreement with Iran had been “negotiated” and that the issue of reopening the Strait of Hormuz was included in it.
