U.S. Military Official Says Afghanistan Remains a Key Focus of Security Concerns

A senior U.S. military official has said that Afghanistan remains one of the main sources of terrorist threats and that militant activity in the country continues to be closely monitored by Washington. Speaking during a hearing before U.S. lawmakers, Cooper said: “Afghanistan remains at the forefront of terrorist activity that we are monitoring.” He added that further details should be discussed in classified sessions. He also said the United States is working with regional partners to contain and suppress potential threats emerging from Afghanistan and is closely observing developments in the region. The remarks come as U.S. officials have continued to express concern about militant groups operating in Afghanistan following the withdrawal of American forces from the country in 2021. The Taliban, however, have consistently denied the presence of such groups on Afghan soil. The United States Department of State had also previously warned that no country should align itself with what it described as “malign actors.”
