Shanghai Cooperation Organization: Stability in Afghanistan Vital for Regional Security

Deputy foreign ministers of member states of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization met in Moscow on Friday April 24 to discuss the situation in Afghanistan and the broader region. Participants reiterated their support for Afghanistan as an independent, neutral, and peaceful state, free from terrorism, war, and narcotics-related threats. Member states have consistently emphasized that a stable Afghanistan is essential for ensuring long-term regional security. During the meeting, several countries also raised concerns over drug trafficking originating from Afghanistan. The Shanghai Cooperation Organization, established in 2001, includes members such as Russia, China, Central Asian states, India, Pakistan, Iran, and Belarus.
